1. Who we are
SafeRent is a trust and operations platform for residential renting in Nigeria, operated by Pair Collar. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect personal data when you use our websites, apps, waitlist, and related services.
It applies to customers using SafeRent as tenants, landlords, or agents, and to people who join our waitlist.
2. Information we collect
Account and identity
- Name, email, phone, and password or social login details
- Profile photo (which may be shown to people you deal with on SafeRent)
- Identity verification information for Nigeria through our verification partner (currently Dojah): government ID, biometric or liveness checks where required, and identifiers such as NIN and BVN (with your consent)
- Secure records of verified identity identifiers used only to prevent duplicate accounts and re-verification fraud — not for marketing
- Two-factor authentication setup information, if you enable it
Property and transaction data
- Buildings, apartments, photos and documents you upload, and address verification results
- Applications, inspection bookings, lease details, tenancy dates, renewals, and move-out requests
- Repair requests, supporting media, and related comments
- Amounts you pay or receive: rent, caution, agent fee, and inspection fees
Payments and wallet
- Payment references and status through our payment partner (currently Paystack); we do not store full card numbers
- Wallet balances (available and pending), bank account details you save for withdrawals, and withdrawal history
Usage and support
- Device, browser, IP address, and general location signals
- Activity needed to run your account and transactions
- Messages you send to SafeRent support
- Waitlist email, role, and survey answers if you join from our website
- Status updates about your applications, inspections, leases, repairs, and similar activity
3. How we use data
- Provide SafeRent — accounts, listings, inspections, applications, leases, tenancies, repairs, and wallets
- Process listing photos and videos you upload, including applying a SafeRent logo watermark for display on SafeRent (see the Terms of Use)
- Verify identity and prevent fraud, scams, and duplicate or re-verification abuse
- Process payments, escrow holds, refunds, and payouts
- Calculate trust signals such as landlord and tenant scores and agent ratings
- Send transactional emails (for example verification codes, identity results, payment reminders, inspection reminders, and repair updates)
- Provide customer support and handle disputes covered by our policies
- Comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) and other legal obligations
Marketing messages, if any, require appropriate consent and can be opted out where required. Messages needed to run your account or a transaction are not optional marketing.
5. What other customers may see
When you interact on a deal — such as an application, inspection, lease, agent assignment, or repair — the other party may see your name, profile photo, and relevant trust signals. Please keep your profile photo clear and current.
Public listing browse does not show tenant profile photos. Public listings may show limited landlord trust or repair-related information.
6. Communications
- Transactional email for security and deal operations
- Status updates in SafeRent about your transactions
- Support messages with SafeRent staff
- Comments on repair requests between tenant and landlord
7. Retention and account deletion
We keep data while your account is active and as needed for disputes, fraud prevention, legal compliance, and financial records.
When you delete your account, or when we suspend or close it:
- Deletion may be blocked if wallet balances, open payouts, open tenancies, or unsigned leases remain.
- Personal data is removed from active use where we can do so.
- Closing an account does not erase limited identity records used to stop re-verification fraud. We may retain your email and secure identity identifiers (derived from NIN/BVN or equivalent) after delete or suspend so the same government identity cannot verify a second account.
- Those records are kept for fraud prevention and platform integrity only — not for marketing.
Erasure rights under the NDPA may be limited where retention is necessary for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes.
8. Your rights (NDPA)
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, you may have the right to access, correct, delete (subject to limits), withdraw consent where applicable, object to certain processing, and lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).
Contact admin@saferent.africa to exercise these rights. We will respond within the timeframes required by law.
9. Security
We use technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk, including encryption in transit, access controls, and staff access limited to what is needed for support and operations. You must protect your login details and enable two-factor authentication where available.
Where a breach is likely to affect your rights, we will notify affected customers and the NDPC within 72 hours when required by law.
11. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Significant changes will be notified by email or a notice in SafeRent. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.
